A fire that broke out in the Chandpai Range`s Kalamteji area of the Sundarbans East Division on Saturday morning, has been fully extinguished.
Bopuleshwar Devnath, Dhansagar station officer of the Forest Department, on Sunday (March 23) morning confirmed this.
Meanwhile, a three-member committee has been formed to find out the reason behind the blaze and asked to submit report within a very short time.
"Although the fire service members left in the evening, the water was supplied through the forest department`s own pumps and pipelines from 9PM on Saturday. More than 50 local volunteers, along with forest guards and officials, worked throughout the night to control the fire. The fire is now completely under control," Bopuleshwar Devnath said.
Fire Services members went to the spot at 8AM on Sunday. Forest Department and local volunteers are checking whether there is any risk of the fire spreading again, which has been brought under control.
The cause of the fire is unknown. However, Kazi Mohammad Nurul Karim, divisional forest officer (DFO) of the Sundarbans East Division, believes the fire may have started from a cigarette accidentally thrown by a fisherman, wood collector, or honey collector.
