Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her hope for US involvement in the next European meeting on Ukraine, while reiterating Rome`s stance of not sending troops to defend any peace agreement.
Meloni made these remarks at a summit in Paris attended by Ukraine’s European allies and President Volodymyr Zelensky, following former US President Donald Trump’s surprise move to engage in direct talks with the Kremlin.
A far-right leader who values Italy’s relationship with the US, Meloni emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with the United States to end the conflict and secure peace. She stated her desire for an American delegation to participate in the next coordination meeting.
While European nations agreed to intensify sanctions on Russia, Meloni reiterated Italy’s position of not participating in any military force on the ground, even after a potential peace agreement. Her office underscored that lasting peace requires continued support for Ukraine along with "solid and credible security guarantees" within the Euro-Atlantic framework, potentially referencing NATO`s Article 5.
Despite Ukraine’s offer for a 30-day ceasefire through the US, Russia has yet to respond, leaving European allies frustrated as the war, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022, continues.
