The Department of Prisons has initiated a major rebranding and reform effort by renaming Bangladesh Jail to `Correction Services Bangladesh`, reflecting a shift toward a more rehabilitative and human-centric approach to incarceration.
The announcement was made by Inspector General of Prisons (IGP), Brigadier General Syed Md Motaher Hossain, during a press conference held at the Prisons Headquarters on Tuesday.
“This initiative aims to place greater emphasis on prison reform and rehabilitation,” said IGP Motaher Hossain. “The new name reflects our commitment to transforming the system from mere confinement to one focused on correction, reformation, and reintegration into society.”
To support this transformation, the draft of the `Correction Service Act-2025` has been finalised and submitted for government approval. The proposed law will modernise existing prison regulations and align them with international standards on human rights and correctional practices.
In addition to the rebranding, the department has taken concrete steps to improve infrastructure and management. Two new central prisons and four new district prisons have been opened to ease overcrowding, a long-standing challenge in the prison system.
Moreover, the Dhaka Division has been split into two zones to enhance administrative coordination and operational efficiency.
The move signals a broader effort by the interim administration to reform public institutions and promote a justice system that prioritises rehabilitation over punishment. With this rebranding, Bangladesh joins a growing number of countries adopting “correctional services” as the standard nomenclature for prison systems worldwide.
