Former Minister Latif Siddiqui, along with several Awami League leaders, was taken into custody and later brought to the Detective Branch (DB) office following unrest at a roundtable event organized by ‘Manch 71’ at Dhaka Reporters Unity.
Confirming the matter, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khalid Mansur said that Latif and others were taken to the DB office for questioning.
Regarding possible arrests, he statedthatdetails would be provided after the interrogation.
The roundtable, title ‘Our Great War of Independence and the Constitution of Bangladesh’, was held on Thursday morning at the Shafiqul Kabir Auditorium. Former Gono Forum President Dr. Kamal Hossain was scheduled to attend as chief guest.
Around noon, a group of protesters entered the venue, surrounded Latif Siddiqui, and shouted slogans accusing him of being an accomplice of the Awami League and fascism.
Police intervened promptly, taking him and others into custody to prevent any violence.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Md. Masud Alam said that they took them into the custody to protect Siddiqui and his associates from the angry crowd.
