Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed has said that the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court does not want to provide a temporary solution by reinstating the caretaker government system.
He added that the country’s highest court is seeking an effective resolution regarding the election-time government to ensure that the process is not repeatedly disrupted, with the aim of establishing a system that will have far-reaching effects in strengthening democracy in the country.
The Chief Justice made the remarks on Wednesday (27 August) during the hearing of petitions requesting a review of the verdict that annulled the caretaker government system. The review petitions were filed separately by the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, five eminent citizens, and one individual—four petitions in total. The hearings continued for the second day in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
The session commenced after 9:30 am before a full seven-judge bench of the Appellate Division led by the Chief Justice. Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajol and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir appeared for the petitioners, while Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman represented the state.
Earlier, on Tuesday (26 August), the first day of hearings began on the four separate petitions filed by political parties and six individuals seeking a review of the verdict that annulled the caretaker government system.
