As part of the previously announced ‘Long March to Dhaka’ programme, students from engineering departments of various universities across the country blocked Shahbagh intersection in the capital for the second consecutive day on Wednesday (27 August), pressing three demands.
The protest began around 11:00 am, resulting in the closure of the intersection and surrounding roads, causing severe traffic congestion.
The students’ demands include: discontinuing the use of the title “Engineer” before the names of diploma engineers, refraining from promoting diploma engineers to the ninth grade, and providing undergraduate engineers opportunities in tenth-grade positions.
During the protest, students staged a sit-in at Shahbagh, raising various slogans. Buses traveling from Banglamotor to Shahbagh and onward to Matsya Bhaban were stranded, while traffic from Elephant Road towards Shahbagh and other areas came to a halt.
The demonstration follows a five-hour sit-in staged at the same location on Tuesday.
