Traffic came to a standstill in the capital’s Paltan area on Tuesday as activists of the Gono Odhikar Parishad staged a blockade, calling for swift action against those responsible for the recent assault on their leaders, including party chief Nurul Haque Nur.
Demonstrators pressed a three-point demand that also included the resignation of the government’s home affairs adviser and a ban on political activities of 14 parties, among them the Jatiyo Party.
Police confirmed that the protest disrupted vehicular movement through the busy intersection for hours.
“They are insisting on their three-point demand. Additional forces have been deployed to maintain order, and negotiations are underway to disperse the crowd,” said Hossain Mohammad Farabi, assistant commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Motijheel division.
The protest reflects growing anger within the party following the attack on Nur, who remains in critical condition with serious injuries.
