| The government has authorised limited imports of onions starting Sunday, December 7, in a bid to keep the essential commodity’s market stable.
The Ministry of Agriculture gave the permission in a press release on Saturday.
The notification reads that 50 import permits will be issued each day, with each permit allowing the import of up to 30 tonnes of onions.
The measure aims to maintain a manageable price level amid rising domestic market pressure.
According to the circular, only importers who previously applied for import approval since August 1 will be eligible to reapply, and each importer will have the opportunity to submit just one application.
The ministry added that the limited import arrangement will continue until further notice to help keep onion prices in check nationwide.
