| Special Correspondent: Incidents of atrocities and violence against minorities by extremist Hindus continue under the Modi government in India. In the latest incident, a Christian priest in the Indian state of Odisha has been brutally beaten by a group of extremist Hindu rioters.
According to the Indian newspaper, The New Indian Express, rioters affiliated with Bajrang Dal in Odisha stormed the house of a Christian priest, where he was attending a prayer ceremony with his family and others.
The attackers brutally tortured the priest, beat him with sticks and forced him to chant Hindutva slogans. According to the newspaper, the attackers smeared vermilion on the priest’s face, made him wear a necklace of shoes and dragged him around the village.
The report also claims that despite requests for help during the incident, no action was taken by the police.
Human rights experts have expressed concern over the incident and said that the increasing incidents of violence against minorities in India are leading to increased social unrest.
According to human rights activists, such incidents not only raise questions about religious freedom but also raise serious concerns about the rule of law.
It should be noted that the United Nations Human Rights Committee has also emphasized effective legislation and practical measures to protect minorities in India in the past, however, global concern has been expressed over Modi’s failure to implement these recommendations in India.
