Poached guest birds released in Naogaon
  23, January, 2026, 4:49:59:PM

(BSS) - Rakta Daha Beel, a traditional wetland spread across Raninagar upazila of Naogaon district and Adamdighi upazila of Bogura district, serves as a seasonal refuge for numerous migratory birds every winter.

However, illegal hunting and trading of these guest birds have recently raised serious concerns, as their numbers have been declining steadily.

Despite the government`s firm stance against bird hunting and its ongoing efforts to bring offenders under the law, some unscrupulous individuals continue to engage in poaching for financial gain.

On Thursday morning, a hunter illegally captured seven migratory birds near the Rakta Daha Beel tourist area and bird village in Raninagar upazila. The birds were later sold to a buyer. Upon learning of the incident, Mahbubur Rahman, acting headmaster of Bhatkoi Government Primary School, promptly informed the upazila administration.

Responding immediately, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), along with the fisheries officer and other officials, rushed to the spot. The birds were rescued from sacks and released into the open sky.

During the operation, the UNO Md. Rakibul Hasan issued a stern warning to those involved in hunting, selling, and buying migratory birds. He emphasized that Rakta Daha Beel must be preserved as a safe haven for guest birds that arrive each winter in search of food and warmth.

"The safety of migratory birds is threatened mainly by three groups-hunters, sellers, and buyers," the UNO said. He called upon local residents to remain vigilant, monitor such activities, and assist the administration by providing timely information.

He also urged everyone to abandon greed and work collectively to ensure that Rakta Daha Beel remains a secure and welcoming sanctuary for migratory birds throughout the winter season.
