11,000 new CCTV cameras to be installed in Dhaka
  8, May, 2026, 11:24:7:PM

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is escalating its security measures across the capital with plans to install 11,000 additional CCTV cameras at various strategic points, as part of a broader crackdown on juvenile gangs, terrorism, and street crime.

The acting DMP commissioner stated that crime-prone areas, including Mohammadpur, are being given special attention.

Approximately 700 cameras are already being installed in Mohammadpur alone to combat teenage gang activity and snatching. Alongside the surveillance drive, police manpower in the area has been increased, a new police outpost has been inaugurated in Basila, and another is in the pipeline.

Additionally, extra Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and patrol inspectors have been deployed across 50 police stations in the capital.

Deputy Police Commissioner for Media and Public Relations NM Nasiruddin noted that 1,910 CCTV cameras are currently operational in Dhaka. Of these, 710 are managed directly by the DMP, while 1,200 are operated through Law and Order Coordination Committees in areas including Gulshan and Banani.

The tender process for procuring the 11,000 additional cameras is currently underway.

Police officials highlighted that analyzing CCTV footage has significantly accelerated the resolution of theft, snatching, and robbery cases. The central control room enables rapid deployment of response teams in the event of any incident. Temporary cameras are also deployed during large-scale public events such as Pahela Baishakh and national days to bolster crowd safety.

The DMP also confirmed that ongoing operations include block raids, routine patrols, and plainclothes intelligence surveillance to identify and apprehend criminals. Bringing juvenile gang members who use bladed weapons to justice has been identified as a key challenge.

Beyond crime control, authorities noted that the expanded camera network is also contributing to easing traffic congestion in the capital.
