Chinese Vice President meets Michelle Bachelet
  6, June, 2026, 12:56:29:PM

International Desk: Chinese Vice President Han Zheng held a bilateral meeting on Wednesday with Michelle Bachelet, one of the candidates for the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, during which the two sides exchanged views on multilateral cooperation and the future role of the UN.

During the meeting, Han said the United Nations embodies humanity’s aspiration for lasting peace and shared prosperity across the globe.

He noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping has put forward a series of major global initiatives aimed at building a community with a shared future for mankind, including the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative. According to Han, these proposals are fully consistent with the spirit and principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

Han further stressed that China stands ready to work with all parties to ensure that the United Nations continues to play its central role in global affairs. He reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to supporting the development of a more just, equitable and effective system of global governance.

For her part, Bachelet highly praised China’s long-standing commitment to multilateralism and its support for the work of the United Nations. She particularly commended China’s contributions to advancing the UN’s three core pillars—peace and security, development, and human rights—in a balanced manner.

Bachelet also welcomed China’s support for the principle of member-state leadership within the UN system and its backing for reforms aimed at enhancing the organization’s effectiveness and overall performance.

She expressed her willingness to maintain close cooperation with China in upholding the fundamental purposes and principles of the United Nations and in strengthening the organization’s role on the global stage.
