Fire Service and Civil Defence filed a case over the death of firefighter Md Sohanur Zaman Nayan, who was run over and killed by a truck while taking part in the effort to douse the at the secretariat, early Thursday.
Ruhul Amin Molla, who is stationed at the Fire Service headquarters, filed the case with the Shahbagh Police Station on Thursday under the Road Transport Act, 2018.
Mohammad Khalid Mansur, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh police station, said the accused in the case are -- truck driver Md Bellal Hossain, 36, and his assistant, Farhad Hossain, 20.
After being informed that a fire broke out at Secretariat at 1:45am on Thursday, 19 units of the fire fighter rushed to the spot. Nayan was taking part in the operations and was crossing the road to connect a water hose when he was run over and critically injured by a truck.
The injured firefighter was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Following the incident, local people detained the truck driver Bellal and his assistant Farhad along with the truck and handed them over to police.
Home Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has taken part in the funeral prayers for firefighter Md Sohanur Zaman Nayan held at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters in Dhaka’s Bangabazar at 2pm on Thursday.
Before that, Fire Service personnel and the home advisor paid their respects at the coffin with flowers. A guard of honour was turned out by a group of smart firefighters.
An ambulance carrying the body with officers and colleagues of Nayan left for Atpania village, under Mithapukur Thana in Rangpur district after the janaza.
