The driver and helper of a truck have been sent to jail in a case over the death of firefighter Md Sohanur Zaman Nayan, who was run over and killed by a truck while taking part in the effort to douse the at the secretariat, early Thursday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman passed the order on Thursday as police produced the driver Belal Hossain Sumon, 36, and his associate Farhad, 20, before the court and pleaded to keep them behind bars until the end of the probe in the case. According to the case documents, the fire broke out in building number 7 of the Secretariat at 1.52AM. Members of the Fire Service and the Civil Defence reached the spot within two minutes after the fire broke out and Nayan along with his colleagues started to their action to douse the flame.
As Nayan was crossing the road with a water pipe to connect it with a fire engine, the speedy truck crushed him, leaving him critically injured. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead. The bystanders detained Belal and Farhad as they tried to flee the scene and handed them over to police. Fire Service and Civil Defence employee Ruhul Amin Mollah filed the case under the Road Transport Act.
