Online Desk : Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed announced that the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has been directed to conduct a survey to identify eligible businesses currently outside the income tax net.
This initiative is part of the government`s plan to expand income tax coverage.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday (January 7), the adviser highlighted the need to rationalise income tax collection.
"Those with the ability to pay taxes must do so at the same rate. We will ensure fairness, so no one can evade taxes through manipulation," he said.
The Finance Adviser acknowledged the need to increase tax collection but cautioned against expecting significant immediate growth in coverage. He noted that many business owners, including those without VAT registration, are currently avoiding income tax obligations.
"I have instructed the NBR to conduct a swift survey. For instance, a grocery store located at a police station headquarters earns substantial revenue, yet it might not be paying income tax," Salehuddin said.
He also emphasised encouraging new entrants into the business sector, saying, "We will support those who have not yet had opportunities in business, enabling them to thrive under fair conditions."
On economic stability, Salehuddin highlighted that proactive measures had stabilized the country`s reserves at $22 billion, with $4.5 billion in outstanding dues also cleared.
When asked about inflation, he said, "Inflation has decreased by one percent. If this positive trend continues, we expect further reductions."
The measures aim to strengthen the country`s fiscal position while ensuring greater inclusivity in tax collection.
