Police have arrested a 20-year-old student for the murder of an elderly domestic help in Faleshwar area of Feni town.
The arrest was made on Tuesday in Hathazari, Chattogram, following investigations by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
The arrested is Abir Al Rafi and the ill-fated housekeeper was Masuda Begum, 65.
Feni PBI Superintendent of Police (SP) Joyita Shilpi revealed during a press conference on Wednesday that Rafi had squandered money meant for a laptop on gambling. Unable to repay debts incurred from his addiction, he turned to theft and robbery.
On December 26, Rafi broke into the home of Golam Kibria Bakul, brother of former municipal councilor Golam Faruk, intending to steal. During the robbery, Masuda Begum confronted him. In response, Rafi stabbed her multiple times with a sharp knife, fleeing the scene immediately after.
Masuda`s son, Md Zafar, filed a murder case the following day, prompting the PBI to begin an investigation. Utilizing CCTV footage and conducting operations in Chattogram and Noakhali, police identified and apprehended Rafi.
During interrogation, Rafi confessed to the murder. Police also recovered the blood-stained knife used in the crime and the black shirt he wore during the attack.
