A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered five members of the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir to be sent to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over clashes with the police during its March for Khilafah programme.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Wahiduzzaman issued the order on Sunday.
The convicted are Masrafi Rahman Mahi, 20, Irfan Shahriar, 20, Saiful Islam, 19, M Anasur Rahman, 20, and Sohel Rana, 39.
The investigators sought a 10-day remand but the court sent them to jail and scheduled the remand hearing for March 13.
The arrests follow violent clashes on March 8, when Hizb ut-Tahrir activists defied police orders and attempted to march from the Baitul Mukarram Mosque towards Paltan.
Protesters, carrying banners, flags, and sticks, chanted anti-government slogans. When police intervened, they responded with brickbats, prompting security forces to disperse them using tear gas and sound grenades.
A total of 17 members on Saturday were remanded for five days, while three others were remanded on March 7 for varying duration.
The case, filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009 (Amended 2013), accuses the group of attempting to undermine national sovereignty and public security.
