BGMEA urges buyers, retailers for patience amid US tariff challenges
  7, April, 2025, 10:06:53:PM

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has reached out to global buyers, brands, retailers, and representatives, urging their continued support and patience following the recent announcement of reciprocal tariffs by the United States.

The new 37 per cent tariff on Bangladeshi exports, particularly apparel, has created significant uncertainty in the industry, given that the US accounts for nearly one-fifth of Bangladesh`s garment exports.

A challenging situation for exporters and buyers

In an open letter addressed to valued partners, BGMEA Administrator Md Anwar Hossain acknowledged the challenges posed by the sudden tariff imposition, which has raised concerns among both Bangladeshi exporters and international buyers.

The uncertainty surrounding cost structures, supply chain planning, and long-term sourcing decisions has added pressure on all stakeholders.

Hossain emphasised the shared nature of the challenge: "We fully recognise the pressure this has created at your end. The uncertainty surrounding cost structures, supply chain planning, and long-term sourcing decisions is significant, and we acknowledge your circumstances with utmost sincerity."

Government and industry efforts underway

The BGMEA assured its partners that both the government and private sector are treating the issue with the utmost seriousness. High-level consultations between key industry stakeholders and government officials are already underway, with further discussions expected soon.

Additionally, the government of Bangladesh has initiated engagement with US authorities to address the situation and align bilateral trade relations.

Appeal for solidarity and collaboration

Recognising the urgency of the situation, Hossain noted that several brands and retailers have already contacted their Bangladeshi suppliers to discuss potential measures to mitigate the impact.

However, he cautioned against transferring the burden downstream to suppliers at this early stage, as it could exacerbate stress across the supply chain.

"We humbly request your patience and support during this period as Bangladesh pursues a meaningful resolution," Hossain wrote, appealing for solidarity and collaboration from global partners.

He highlighted the decades-long trust and partnership that have enabled Bangladesh’s garment industry to become globally competitive, sustainable, and socially impactful, supporting millions of workers, many of whom are women.

Call for suggestions and insights

The BGMEA also invited suggestions and insights from global partners to navigate this challenging period effectively. "With solidarity and collaboration, we will be able to address these challenges effectively," Hossain stated, reaffirming the association’s commitment to maintaining strong relationships with its international partners.

A test of partnership and resilience

The recent tariff announcement has underscored the interconnectedness of global trade and the need for collaborative solutions. As Bangladesh works to resolve the issue, the BGMEA’s appeal for patience and partnership highlights the importance of maintaining trust and cooperation in overcoming shared challenges.
