Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a British record transfer fee of around £130 million ($176 million), according to multiple media outlets including The Athletic and The Telegraph.
The Swedish striker is expected to complete a medical on Monday before finalising a six-year contract with the Premier League champions. The fee surpasses the previous British transfer record of £106 million paid by Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Isak, 25, enjoyed a standout season in 2024–25, scoring 23 Premier League goals — second only to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah — and helping Newcastle secure a Champions League spot.
The move follows a tense summer transfer saga, with Isak reportedly training separately from the Newcastle squad after expressing his desire to join Liverpool. The Magpies had initially rejected a £110 million offer earlier in the window.
However, Newcastle’s recent acquisition of German striker Nick Woltemade for a club-record fee of around £69 million paved the way for Isak’s departure. Manager Eddie Howe suggested last week that a high-profile sale could help the club meet financial regulations, after being forced to offload players like Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh last year to avoid penalties.
Isak becomes Liverpool’s marquee signing in what has been a blockbuster transfer window for the Merseyside club. The Reds have also secured deals for German midfielder Florian Wirtz, French forward Hugo Ekitike, right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, and left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.
Despite the high-profile arrivals, Liverpool have yet to fully recapture the dominant form that saw them clinch last season’s Premier League title with four games to spare. Still, they sit top of the table with a perfect record of three wins from three, including a narrow 1-0 victory over last season’s runners-up Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday.
In contrast, Newcastle are struggling early in the campaign, sitting 17th after a goalless draw with Leeds United.
