Cold wave may return in country after Jan 9: Met office

Mild to moderate cold wave is likely to sweep over the country again after January 9 and in the middle of the month and severe cold waves may sweep the northern and southwestern parts, including Jashore, Chuadanga, Khulna and Barishal, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Mild to moderate cold wave is likely to occur after Thursday in the country again and fog would prevail throughout the month, it said.

One to two moderate to severe cold waves are likely to take place over west, northwest, north and northeastern parts of the country in the current month, BMD Meteorologist Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik told a news agency.


Besides, in the middle of the current month, severe cold waves may sweep the northern and southwestern parts of the country,” said the Met office.

The temperature may rise slightly for the next two to three days due to the appearance of the Sun, met office sources said, adding that however, people may suffer from cold especially in the morning and night.

Mild cold wave is currently sweeping over the Panchagarh district. Mild to moderate cold wave may return after January 9. Temperature may come down to 10 degrees Celsius during that time in some parts of the country.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD)`s monthly outlook for January published on Wednesday, the entire country, particularly northern region, is reeling under a sharp drop in temperature as the sun appears lately due to dense fog.

Besides, people may witness two to three mild to moderate cold waves elsewhere over the country in January.
BMD on Sunday predicted that weather may remain dry over the country for the next 24 hours, beginning this morning.

Weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country, said met office in its daily forecast which begins at 9AM.

Moderate to dense fog may occur over the country from midnight to morning. Air navigation, inland river transport and road communication may disrupt temporarily due to dense fog.

Night and day temperature may rise slightly over the country.

Country`s minimum temperature on Sunday was recorded 09.7 degrees celsius at Tetulia in Rangpur division and 15.0 degrees celsius at Dhaka city.

Ferry movement on the Paturia-Daulatdia route in the Padma River remained suspended from the early hours of today due to poor visibility as the dense fog blanketed the river route, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Patura Ghat sources said.

Deputy General Manager (DGM) BIWTC Paturia Ghat Nasir Mahmud Chowdhury said ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia route had been suspended since 1AM on Sunday. Aricha-Kazirhat ferry services were also suspended for dense fog.
