Trump’s Visit Signals New Phase in China–U.S. Relations
  13, May, 2026, 3:14:31:AM

International Desk: A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on May 11 (Monday) that, at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, U.S. President Donald Trump will pay a state visit to China from May 13 to 15.

The upcoming trip will mark the first visit by President Trump to China in nine years. His previous state visit took place from November 8 to 10, 2017.

High-level diplomacy between the two heads of state plays an indispensable and strategically guiding role in China–U.S. relations. Since President Trump’s re-election, the leaders of China and the United States have engaged in seven significant rounds of communication over the past year.

Key exchanges include:

On November 7, 2024, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to Donald Trump following his election as U.S. president.

On January 17, 2025, President Xi held a phone conversation with President Trump at his request.

On June 5, 2025, the two leaders again held a telephone conversation.

On September 19, 2025, President Xi spoke with President Trump by phone.

On October 30, 2025, President Xi met President Trump in Busan.

On November 24, 2025, the two leaders held another telephone conversation.

On February 4, 2026, they once again exchanged views via phone call.

In their most recent discussion, President Xi emphasized that both sides should strengthen dialogue and communication in line with the consensus already reached, properly manage differences, and expand practical cooperation. He noted that no positive effort is too small to undertake, just as no harmful action is too minor to avoid.

He further called for steady, step-by-step progress in building mutual trust and shaping a correct path of coexistence, so that 2026 may become a year in which China and the United States move toward mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.
