Five Chinese Scientists Recognized for Research Advancing Human Well-Being
  9, July, 2026, 11:42:56:PM

International Desk: Science is not confined to the walls of a laboratory. It reaches into space, restores fragile ecosystems, improves livestock breeding on high-altitude plateaus, safeguards maternal health, and protects endangered plant species. In recognition of such contributions, China has honored five researchers with the title of “Most Beautiful Science and Technology Workers.”

The awards were presented as part of the country`s broader efforts to advance scientific and technological self-reliance. Although the recipients work in different fields, they share a common goal: applying scientific research to improve people`s lives and promote sustainable development.

Among those honored is Gui Haichao, a professor at Beihang University and the first payload specialist to serve aboard China`s space station. During the Shenzhou-16 mission in 2023, he spent 154 consecutive days in orbit and participated in 68 scientific experiments. He is currently leading research on space robotics and the management of orbital space debris.

Reflecting on China`s achievements in space exploration, Gui said the country once launched a crewed space mission every two to three years, whereas it now carries out two such missions annually—a sign of the rapid progress of China`s space program.

Also recognized was Kong Hainan, a 77-year-old retired professor from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, for his long-standing contributions to environmental protection. For more than two decades, he has worked to reduce pollution in Erhai Lake in Yunnan Province. His efforts have significantly improved water quality, and in 2017, after an 11-year absence, a rare aquatic plant reappeared in the lake—an important indicator of a recovering ecosystem.

In the field of medicine, Professor Chen Lei, a neurologist at West China Hospital, was honored for establishing the world`s first specialized database for women of childbearing age living with epilepsy. His research was inspired by concerns over ensuring safer pregnancies and better maternal healthcare for women with the condition.

At an altitude of nearly 4,200 meters on the Qinghai–Xizang Plateau, researcher Song Renti has spent four decades developing improved yak breeding and husbandry techniques. His work has earned him the affectionate nickname “Dr. Yak” among local herders, whose livelihoods have benefited from his research.

Meanwhile, Huang Kuiyun, a plant conservation specialist with the China Three Gorges Corporation, has led the conservation and relocation of 2,160 rare plant species. He is now applying his expertise to efforts aimed at combating desertification in northern China.

Huang believes that science and innovation are like the two wings of a bird—neither can flourish without the other. Alongside his research, he actively promotes science education and public awareness to encourage greater scientific literacy.

From space exploration and ecological restoration to medical innovation, livestock development, and biodiversity conservation, the achievements of these five scientists demonstrate how science makes its greatest impact when it improves lives, protects nature, and helps build a more sustainable future.
