Xi Jinping Meets Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé: New Horizons for China-Togo Relations
  15, October, 2026, 12:15:27:AM

On the afternoon of October 13, Chinese President Xi Jinping held high-level talks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing with Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Council of Ministers of Togo, who is on an official visit to China.

During the meeting, the two leaders announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a China-Togo community with a shared future in the new era.

Addressing the resolution of pressing challenges across Africa, President Xi outlined four fundamental principles for constructive engagement by all relevant stakeholders:

First, uphold African ownership. The people of Africa are the true masters of the continent, and their leadership must play the central role in managing regional affairs.

Second, champion equity and justice. All parties must strictly abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and uphold respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nations concerned.

Third, prioritize peace over conflict. Armed confrontation and unilateral sanctions cannot resolve international disputes. Sustainable solutions require mutual respect, inclusive consultation, the pursuit of common ground while setting aside differences, and mutual accommodation.

Fourth, address both symptoms and root causes. Equal emphasis must be placed on managing immediate security imperatives while devising strategic blueprints for long-term sustainable development.

Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé stated that Togo is keen to study and draw upon China’s governance and development experience in greater depth. He warmly welcomed Chinese enterprises to expand investment and commercial operations in Togo.

Faure also expressed Togo’s strong commitment to deepening cooperation with China across diverse domains, including trade, infrastructure development, and science and technology.

He emphasized that Togo fully endorses President Xi’s four principles regarding constructive stakeholder engagement in resolving African hotspot issues, speaking highly of China’s indispensable role in upholding world peace and stability and confronting global challenges.
