A tragic landslide claimed the life of a laborer at Chapra area of Ashashuni upazila in Satkhira district on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred near Marichchapa River as workers were excavating soil.

Jamirul Islam, 40, a resident of Uttar Chapra village and son of Mahmud Ali, was working alongside his brother Imamul and cousin Anarul, among others, when a mound of soil suddenly collapsed.

Local Union Parishad member Nazrul Islam said that the workers were clearing soil near the Chapra Hindol Youth Association grounds. Jamirul became trapped under the fallen soil. Fire service personnel arrived promptly to rescue him from the debris and rushed him to Ashashuni Upazila Health Complex, where he was pronounced dead by on-duty doctors.

Ashashuni Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam confirmed the incident, adding that necessary investigations are underway.
