A woman was killed by her husband following a heated argument over allegations of an extramarital affair at Amtali upazila in Barguna district on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night in Tarikata village under Arpangasia union in the upazila.
However, police have arrested Monirul Islam, the accused husband, who was detained by locals while attempting to flee after the incident.
The arrestee Monirul Islam, 22, is son of Harun Khan from Tarikata village, while the victim, Tinni Akter, 20, was daughter of Nizam Hawlader from Chawra Chandra village in the same upazila.
According to police sources, a dispute arose between the couple earlier in Tuesday evening over an extramarital affair. During the argument, Monirul struck Tinni on the head with a stick in a fit of rage. Severely injured, Tinni was taken to the Amtali Upazila Health Complex by her husband and mother-in-law, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Monirul attempted to escape the scene but was apprehended by locals and handed over to the police.
A relative of Monirul, Nur Alam, stated that the couple had been married for only eight months. Allegations of Tinni`s extramarital affair had caused significant tension in their relationship. Despite efforts from both families to resolve the issue and assurances from Tinni to end the affair, suspicions persisted.
On the night of the incident, Monirul allegedly caught Tinni speaking with her alleged lover on the phone, which led to the violent altercation.
Amtali Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Ariful Islam, confirmed Monirul`s arrest and said that Tinni`s body has been sent to Barguna Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Further investigation is underway.
