BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the party seeks early elections to restore democratic and constitutional rights in Bangladesh as the people have long been deprived of their voting rights.

He said, “The BNP will continue on the path of democracy, guided by the sacrifices made by the people during our long-standing movement.”

The senior leader of BNP was speaking to reporters at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport after returning from London on Monday.

He claimed that for the past 20 years, citizens — particularly the younger generation — have been denied their right to vote. “The core goal of our movement is a swift transition to democracy through free and fair elections,” he said.

When asked about possible reforms ahead of the polls, Khasru said reforms depend on political consensus. “Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Tarique Rahman, and BNP leaders have all emphasized this. Consensus can be reached within one to one and a half months,” he added.

Commenting on the ongoing trial processes, Khasru said justice should be determined by the judiciary.

“Some may face trial under the current government, and others under the next one. It’s a continuous process,” he said, dismissing concerns over accountability.

He reiterated that elections are the only path forward to restore the people`s political and constitutional rights, adding that BNP remains open to dialogue and consensus-building.

In response to allegations from Jamaat-e-Islami and the NCP about a “special relationship” between the government and a certain political party, Khasru said, “Democracy allows everyone to express their opinions. That’s the true strength of our democratic process.”

Regarding the timeline of the next election, Khasru said there is no need to delay until February. “BNP believes issues can be resolved by December. However, elections in February are still acceptable.”

He added that decisions made through consensus are the most sustainable and effective. “This unity has already pushed out authoritarianism, and we must continue making collective decisions.”

On questions about the neutrality of upcoming elections, he said BNP expects the caretaker government to ensure a level playing field. “The whole concept of a caretaker government is to ensure neutrality,” he said.

Khasru also said that reforms would be an ongoing process before and after the elections. “Consensus will define the scope of reforms, and the people will decide the rest through the ballot.”
