Online Report : Malaysian authorities arrested 36 Bangladeshi nationals for suspected ties to extremist ideas and terrorist activities.
The arrests were confirmed on Friday by Malaysia’s Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, according to a report by Malay Mail.
The minister said that a coordinated security operation started on April 24. During this operation, arrests occurred in three phases across the states of Selangor and Johor.
Among those detained, five individuals have been formally charged under Chapter VI of the Malaysian Penal Code for direct involvement in terrorism. These cases have been brought before the Sessions Courts in Shah Alam and Johor Bahru.
Additionally, 15 individuals are set to be deported to Bangladesh. Investigations are still ongoing for the remaining 16 to determine their level of involvement in extremist activities.
According to Minister Saifuddin, intelligence from Malaysia’s Special Branch and coordinated enforcement operations revealed that the group was promoting extremist ideas linked to the Islamic State (IS). This network had reportedly formed recruitment cells aimed at indoctrinating new members, financing terrorist actions, and planning to overthrow the legitimate government in their home country.
The minister stressed that Malaysia will not be a safe haven for any foreign extremist movement. He stated that the Home Ministry is collaborating closely with local and international security agencies to improve intelligence capabilities and take strong action to uphold national peace, stability, and security.
“Any attempt to use Malaysia as a base for terrorist operations or as a transit point for extremist groups will face swift and effective action,” he said.
