OMS yet to start in Sunamganj`s Madhyanagar, locals in distress
  5, September, 2025, 1:57:35:PM

Despite nationwide launch of government’s Open Market Sale (OMS) programme on September 1, Madhyanagar upazila in Sunamganj district has yet to be included, leaving lower and middle-income families in distress due to rising food prices.

Local sources confirmed that last fiscal year, OMS was active in two points within Madhyanagar, benefitting the economically vulnerable population by providing rice and flour at subsidised prices.

However, this year, Madhyanagar’s name is missing from official OMS list, preventing access to essential food supplies at government-fixed rates.

The exclusion has sparked concern and frustration among residents already burdened by soaring market prices.

Local OMS dealers said, “We were regularly selling products under OMS programme last year. But since Madhyanagar is not listed this year, we haven`t been able to begin sales. We urge the government to immediately bring Madhyanagar under OMS coverage.”

Residents echoed similar concerns, pointing out that Madhyanagar is a haor-based area where most people belong to low- and middle-income groups.

"With the current spike in prices of essentials, life has become increasingly difficult. If OMS were available, we could buy rice and flour at lower prices," one resident said.

Madhyanagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Uzzal Roy stated, “We have already sent a letter to higher authorities regarding the issue. Deputy Commissioner (DC) has assured us of swift action. We hope Madhyanagar will soon be added to OMS programme.”

District Food Controller Md. Humayun Kabir added, “Madhyanagar was recently declared a new upazila and does not yet have a separate food department office. It’s currently managed under former Dharmapasha Upazila, which may explain the omission. However, we’ve already addressed the issue in writing and expect a positive resolution soon.”

Until then, the people of Madhyanagar continue to struggle with food insecurity, waiting for the government’s intervention to ensure their access to basic necessities.
