Roads in Rajshahi`sPutia upazila, built bythe Local Government Engineering Department (LGED),arereportedly been falling apart just days after it was finished.
Residents of Baneshwar Union of Putia Upazila in Rajshahi have raised complaints that the Dhulat road has been constructed using very poor-quality materials by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
They claimed that the work of the 490-meter stretch was initially halted after protests over substandard construction, but later resumed following an agreement between the contractor and the upazila engineer.
According to locals, the road’s carpeting was completed hastily before recent rains, using cheap materials. Within about a week, the new carpet started peeling off in several areas, leading to anger among community members.
“We protested against the poor work, but the contractor threatened us with false extortion charges,” said local resident Shimul Ali.
Enamul Haque, a resident of the upazila, accused the contractor of using low-quality brick dust and said that repeated complaints to the Upazila engineer have been ignored.
Contractor Marik Abdul Malek admitted that recent rains impacted the work and promised to make repairs once the weather improves.
Upazila Engineer Parvez Newaz acknowledged that some sections of the road were built poorly and assured that corrections will be made. He also said that a local interest group was causing unrest and mentioned plans to inspect the site on Sunday.
The incident raised concerns about oversight and responsibility in public infrastructure projects in the region.
